Cusilluchayoc: Temple of the Mystical Monkeys of Cusco

Cusilluchayoc is one of the lesser-known yet most intriguing temples in Cusco. Its name comes from Quechua: “Cusillu” (monkey) and “Chayoc” (possessor), meaning “the one who has monkeys.” This ancient Inca sanctuary is a hidden archaeological gem in the mountains, filled with animal symbolism, spirituality, and mystery.

Located just a few minutes from the city of Cusco, Cusilluchayoc offers a mystical atmosphere surrounded by nature, where the ancestral energy can still be felt.

What is the Temple of Cusilluchayoc?

The Temple of Cusilluchayoc is a ceremonial center carved from large blocks of living rock. Unlike other Inca temples dedicated to the sun or moon, this sanctuary honored animals considered sacred, especially monkeys and felines.

Main Features:

  • Monkey sculptures: Stone carvings representing monkeys, symbolizing agility, cleverness, and spiritual connection.
  • Feline representations: Associated with strength, protection, and the living world in the Andean worldview.
  • Main altar: A carved rock likely used for ritual offerings.
  • Mystical location: Surrounded by eucalyptus forests, fields, and ancient Inca trails.

Cusilluchayoc was not only a ceremonial site but also a place of energetic connection between humans, nature, and totemic animals.

History

It is believed that the temple was built during the Tahuantinsuyo era (15th century) under the spiritual influence of the Amautas (Inca sages). Monkeys, although not typical of the highlands, represented supernatural abilities and wisdom, likely influenced by Amazonian mythologies known to the Incas.

With the arrival of the Spanish, many sacred temples were abandoned or buried by urban expansion, leaving Cusilluchayoc almost forgotten until recent times.
