The Colca Canyon, located in the department of Arequipa, is one of the most impressive places in Peru and one of the deepest canyons on the planet, reaching over 4,100 meters (about 13,450 feet) in depth. This destination has become a favorite for those who enjoy nature, majestic views, and high-level trekking. It’s also ideal for observing the majestic flight of the Andean condor in its natural habitat.
Where is the Colca Canyon?
The Colca is located north of Arequipa, about 160 kilometers (around 100 miles) away, in the province of Caylloma. The altitude in the area varies between 2,900 and 4,500 meters (approx. 9,500 to 14,760 feet) above sea level, creating a variety of microclimates and stunning Andean landscapes.
Options for exploring the Colca on foot

There are two main ways to experience this natural wonder:
- One-day excursion: Perfect for travelers with limited time. This option includes transportation, a specialized guide, and stops at the main viewpoints, such as the famous Mirador del Cóndor (Condor Viewpoint).
- Two-day, one-night trek: Ideal for those seeking a more immersive experience. This hike covers about 15 km (approx. 9 miles), starting at the Mirador de San Miguel, descending into the valley to reach the Sangalle oasis, and culminating with the ascent to Cabanaconde.
Details of the 2-day trek
Day 1:
- Early morning departure from Arequipa to the town of Cabanaconde.
- Beginning of the descent from the Mirador de San Miguel.
- Passing through the villages of San Juan de Chuccho, Cosñirhua, and Malata.
- Overnight stay in rustic accommodations in the Sangalle oasis.
Day 2:
- Demanding ascent from Sangalle to Cabanaconde, which can take 3 to 4 hours.
- Return by ground transport to the city of Arequipa.

- Guided tour (all-inclusive): around 60 US dollars per person.
- On your own: about 40 US dollars including transport, food, and accommodation.
- Colca Canyon entrance fee:
- Foreigners: 70 soles
- Visitors from Latin America: 40 soles

This ticket is mandatory for all visitors and is requested at various checkpoints along the route.
What is the climate like in the Colca?
- Dry season (April to October): ideal climate for hikes, with sunny days and little rain. Temperatures range between 9°C and 24°C (approx. 48°F to 75°F).
- Rainy season (November to March): frequent rainfall, with temperatures between 8°C and 23°C (approx. 46°F to 73°F). Caution is advised due to slippery paths.
Travel Recommendations
- Spending at least one day in Arequipa before the hike helps acclimatize to the altitude.
- Bring light clothing for the day and warm clothing for the night, as well as good footwear, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
- Don’t forget to bring water, snacks, a basic first-aid kit, and personal documents.
- If it’s your first time trekking at altitude, consider hiring a local guide.
