The History of Why Machu Picchu Was Built in Such a Complicated Location

Machu Picchu” is one of the most beautiful places on the entire planet. So much so that, without a doubt, it is considered one of the true wonders of the world. If you visit it, it will be an unforgettable experience. We are absolutely sure of that! One of the most beautiful ruins in the world, research on Machu Picchu still continues. It has recently been specifically claimed that the Incas decided to build it intentionally in a very precise place: on a tectonic fault, no less!

This new data was recognized thanks to a spectacular geo-archaeological analysis carried out by the renowned geologist Rualdo Menegat from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. It is now very clear that the location of “Machu Picchu” is no coincidence. In fact, Menegat has assured that “it would be impossible to build such a site in the high mountains if the substrate was not fractured.”

But how did he reach this conclusion? By creating a map of a very dense network of cracks and faults that cross beneath “Machu Picchu.” Indeed! Some run northeast-southwest, while others run northwest-southeast. This creates a perfect “X” beneath the UNESCO World Heritage site.

After a more detailed analysis of the map drawn by Rualdo Menegat, we understand that the urban part of this protected space, as well as the nearby buildings, individual staircases, and farmlands, are perfectly located along these large and spectacular faults.

Another fact to highlight is that we can see exactly the same thing happening in other ancient Inca cities, so it’s probably not a coincidence. A clear example of this can be seen in Pisac, Ollantaytambo, or Cusco. All are located at the same intersection of faults. Furthermore, Menegat confirms it: “Each of them is simply an expression of the main directions of the geological faults of the place.”

One of the conclusions of this study of Machu Picchu is that, after discovering this network of cracks and faults, the Incas did not hesitate to use the large amount of material they had at their disposal to study its construction. In this way, the wall stones fit together perfectly. This way, less energy is needed to carve those enormous stone blocks.

The Incas not only had everything, but they also had other kinds of advantages. The most essential? They can provide water directly. “The tectonic faults in the area transport meltwater and rainwater directly to the site,” said Menegat. As if that weren’t enough, the cracks created by these faults greatly contribute to creating spectacular underground drainage systems, making them perfect.
