Festivals and traditions of Ica

Ica, known for its warm climate and wine production, is a region full of history and traditions. Throughout the year, various festivities are celebrated that pay homage to the culture, faith, and effort of its people. Below, we present the most important festivities of this beautiful region in southern Peru.

International Grape Harvest Festival (Festival de la Vendimia) (March 8th to 18th)

This is one of Ica’s most emblematic festivities, where the hard work of farmers and the grape harvest (vendimia) are honored. For over a week, the city fills with cultural and artistic activities revolving around the production of wine and pisco.

One of the most anticipated moments is the election and coronation of the Harvest Queen (Reina de la Vendimia), who has the honor of performing the traditional grape stomping (pisa de uva), an ancestral process to extract the juice that will become liquor.

Furthermore, visitors can enjoy tastings, parades, typical dance shows, and various activities that highlight the region’s agricultural richness.

National Pisco Sour Day (Primer Sábado de Febrero) (First Saturday of February)

Pisco Sour, considered Peru’s flagship drink, has its own celebration in Ica. On this date, restaurants, bars, and wineries organize contests where bartenders and cocktail experts compete to prepare the best Pisco Sour.

Tourists can enjoy free tastings, preparation exhibitions, and special promotions at the city’s main establishments.

Day of the Señor de Luren (Third Monday of October)

The Señor de Luren, patron saint of Ica, is one of the most venerated religious images in the region. Every year, thousands of devotees participate in an impressive procession that travels through the city’s main streets.

For 17 hours, the image is accompanied by the faithful who adorn the route with flowers and prayers. This celebration is a demonstration of the deep devotion of the people of Ica, who attribute numerous miracles to this image.

Festivity of the Virgen de Yauca (First Sunday of October)

The history of the Virgen de Yauca dates back to the 18th century, when the inhabitants of a small town near Ica found an image of the Virgen del Rosario amidst the vegetation. Despite attempts to move it, the image remained immobile until a priest performed a special prayer.

Since then, the Virgen de Yauca is considered the town’s patron saint, and every year she is honored with a procession and festivities.

The Dance of Pallas (Christmas and Three Kings’ Day)

This is one of Ica’s most representative cultural expressions. During the Christmas (Navidad) and Three Kings’ Day (Fiesta de Reyes) festivities, the Pallas (young maidens dressed in typical costumes) perform a colorful traditional dance.

Accompanied by music and songs, the women tap their heels to the rhythm of “zapateo” (footwork), and some carry guitars or azucenas (lilies), creating a spectacle full of tradition and symbolism.

Holy Week in Ica (Semana Santa)

Holy Week (Semana Santa) in Ica is experienced with great religious fervor. It all begins with the blessing of the palms on Palm Sunday (Domingo de Ramos), followed by processions that travel through the city.

One of the most significant events is the Holy Wednesday (Miércoles Santo) procession, where the image of Jesus Nazareno and the Virgen María tour the main streets accompanied by the faithful.

Throughout the week, temples organize masses, Via Crucis (Stations of the Cross), and other religious activities, making this celebration a special event for believers and tourists.
