Representative typical dances of Peru

The Huayno

It is one of the most representative dances of the Peruvian highlands. It is danced in pairs and combines footwork with agile movements. Its music, performed with instruments such as the quena, charango, and harp, expresses joy and nostalgia.

The Scissors Dance (La Danza de las Tijeras)

Originating from the southern Andes of Peru (Ayacucho, Huancavelica, Apurímac), this dance is performed by dancers who do acrobatics while hitting two metal pieces shaped like scissors. It is linked to ancestral traditions and rituals.

The Marinera

Considered the national dance of Peru, it represents courtship between a man and a woman with elegant movements and the use of a handkerchief. It is divided into various styles, such as the Northern Marinera and the Lima Marinera.

The Wititi

It is a traditional dance from the Arequipa region, especially the Colca Valley. The dancers wear colorful clothing, and it is believed to have warrior or courtship roots.

The Tondero

Originating from the northern coast of Peru (Piura), it is a dance with Afro-Peruvian and Andean influences. It is characterized by being passionate, with footwork and agile turns, representing the flirtation between the man and the woman.

The Festejo

It is one of the most representative Afro-Peruvian dances of the Peruvian coast. Its rhythm is vibrant, with intense percussion (Peruvian cajón) and energetic movements that reflect the joy and African heritage in Peruvian culture.
