Frequently asked questions

Can my young child suffer from altitude sickness (soroche)? How can I prevent or treat it?

This is the main concern for families. The answer is yes, children are just as susceptible to altitude sickness as adults. To prevent it, the most important thing is acclimatization. We recommend spending at least two days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley (which is at a lower altitude) before going on demanding tours. Keep your children well hydrated, offer them light meals, and avoid physical exertion on the first day. Coca tea in small amounts can also help older children. If any symptoms appear, it is essential to rest and consult a doctor.

Definitely, a baby carrier is the best and only viable option. Machu Picchu is a citadel with many slopes, stone stairs, and narrow paths where it is impossible and prohibited to use a stroller. An ergonomic backpack will give you the freedom to move comfortably and safely, while your little one enjoys the ride close to you.

Many group tours have a fixed itinerary, but there are options that are perfect for families. Tours such as the City Tour in Cusco, Maras and Moray or the Sacred Valley have several stops and do not involve long walks. The best option for total flexibility is to hire a private tour, such as “Machu Picchu with Private Guide.” This way, the guide can adapt completely to your family’s pace, allowing for more stops to use the restroom, rest, or simply enjoy a place that your children love.

Policies vary, but generally:

  • Machu Picchu: Children aged 0 to 2 do not pay admission, but must be registered. Children aged 3 to 17 pay a reduced rate.
  • Trains (PeruRail / Inca Rail): Infants aged 0 to 2 can travel on their parents’ lap at no cost (without a seat). From the age of 3, they generally need their own ticket at the child rate.
  • Tours: It depends on the agency, but most offer significant discounts or even free travel for children under 5 who do not occupy a seat on the transport.

It is always advisable to confirm the policy on children when booking each service.
