One of the most pleasant surprises on the Inca Trail is the food. After several hours of hiking at high altitude, arriving at camp to find a table set with freshly prepared, hot meals completely transforms the experience. This isn’t survival food or dehydrated packaged meals. It’s well-organized camp cooking, designed to restore your energy while accommodating dietary preferences.
At Illa Kuntur Travel, meals are included as part of our Classic 4-Day Inca Trail and the shorter version. Our cooking team travels with the group, prepares meals along the trail using fresh ingredients, and can accommodate special dietary requirements when notified in advance.
What a Typical Day of Meals Looks Like
The meal schedule is fairly consistent and helps maintain your energy levels throughout the day:
- Breakfast is served early at the campsite. It usually includes hot oatmeal or quinoa porridge, bread, eggs, fruit, jam, and hot beverages such as coca tea, coffee, or herbal infusions.
- Mid-morning snack to carry in your backpack, such as fruit, cookies, or something light.
- Lunch is served at a designated rest stop. It typically starts with soup, followed by a main course featuring rice, pasta, potatoes, or quinoa with protein and vegetables.
- Afternoon tea is served upon arrival at camp, with a hot beverage, cookies, or canchita (toasted Andean corn).
- Dinner is a more substantial meal served in the dining tent, usually consisting of soup, a main course, and sometimes a simple dessert.
Everything is freshly prepared. The cooks travel ahead with the porters to have lunch and the campsite ready before the group arrives.

Common Ingredients and Dishes on the Inca Trail
Inca Trail cuisine combines Andean ingredients that are easy to digest at high altitude with hearty, comforting meals:
- Quinoa in soups or as a side dish, offering a good source of protein and easy digestion.
- Native potatoes, rice, and pasta to replenish carbohydrates.
- Trout, chicken, or beef in standard meal options.
- Sautéed vegetables or vegetables served in soups.
- Coca tea, muña, and other Andean herbal infusions traditionally used to support digestion and acclimatization.
Menus vary slightly each day to provide different flavors and meet the nutritional needs of physical activity.

Special Diets: Vegetarian, Vegan, and Other Dietary Requirements
Yes, you can hike the Inca Trail with special dietary requirements. Well-organized tour operators, including Illa Kuntur Travel, can prepare customized meals as long as dietary needs are communicated in advance.
Common dietary options available upon request include:
- Vegetarian
- Vegan
- Gluten-free
- Lactose-free
- Specific food allergies (nuts, shellfish, etc.)
The most important thing is to let us know when booking, not the day before departure or once you’ve reached Kilometer 82. Once you’re on the trail, there are no stores or opportunities to purchase additional ingredients. The cooking team plans and carries everything needed from the beginning. When dietary requirements are communicated in advance, special meals can still provide the calories and protein needed for trekking.
On the 4-Day Inca Trail, vegetarian and special dietary meals are prepared separately to prevent cross-contamination.

Practical Tips
- Inform us of any dietary restrictions when booking and confirm them again a few days before departure.
- Bring some of your favorite personal snacks, such as nuts, energy bars, or chocolate, in case you want something extra between meals.
- Drink plenty of water. The team boils water so you can refill your bottles.
- Avoid alcohol and heavy meals in the days leading up to and during the trek, especially if you’re experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness.
- If you have a serious food allergy, remind your guide at the beginning of the trek so the cook is fully aware of your needs.
Well-prepared food is one of the most important factors in making your Inca Trail experience enjoyable. When the cooking team understands your dietary needs, the journey becomes more comfortable and safer.
If you’re planning your trek and have any dietary preferences or restrictions, let us know when making your reservation. At Illa Kuntur Travel, we’ll take care of the arrangements so you can focus on enjoying every step of the trail.
