Guide: How to get to Chavín de Huántar and what to know

Where is Chavín de Huántar?

It is located in the province of Huari, Áncash region, about 110 km southeast of Huaraz (the capital of Áncash).

How to Get There?

From Lima

  1. Lima to Huaraz:
    • By bus: The trip takes between 8 to 10 hours. Companies such as Cruz del Sur, Movil Tours, or Oltursa offer daily services.
    • By private car: The road is in good condition, but caution is advised when driving through the Cordillera.
  2. Huaraz to Chavín de Huántar:
    • Organized tour: The most comfortable option. Departures from Huaraz are between 7:00 am and 8:00 am, returning in the afternoon. They include transport, guide, and sometimes lunch.
    • Public bus: Local buses depart from the Huaraz terminal to Chavín de Huántar. The trip takes about 3 to 4 hours.
    • Taxi or rental car: Ideal for more flexibility. The road passes through the spectacular Cahuish Tunnel and offers breathtaking views.

Special Recommendation:

The trip includes crossing a high pass in the Cordillera Blanca, so be prepared for a spectacular descent towards Chavín. The Cahuish Tunnel (at 4,516 meters above sea level) is a marvel in itself.

What to Bring?

  • Light clothing and a jacket: It’s sunny during the day and cold in the afternoon.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses: The high-altitude sun is very strong.
  • Water bottle.
  • Snacks if traveling on your own (there are simple restaurants in Chavín but not a lot of variety).
  • Cash: Access to ATMs is limited in Chavín town.

How Much Does It Cost?

  • Entrance to the archaeological complex: Around 15 to 20 soles per person (reference price).
  • Tour from Huaraz: From 80 to 120 soles (includes transport, guide, and sometimes lunch).
  • Public bus: Approximately 25 soles or more one way.

Don’t wait any longer, Machu Picchu is waiting for you.
