The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu closes every year throughout February. This is an official measure that affects both the Classic 4-day Inca Trail and the Short 2-day Inca Trail. If you’re planning to travel during this month, it’s important to understand the reasons for the closure and the available alternatives for reaching Machu Picchu.
Why does the Inca Trail close in February?
The closure is due to two main reasons established by the Ministry of Culture and SERNANP:
- Maintenance and conservation: During February, stone stairways, drainage systems, bridges, retaining walls, and campsites undergo repairs. Archaeological sites such as Wiñay Wayna, Phuyupatamarca, Sayacmarca, and Runkurakay are also protected and cleaned.
- Safety during the rainy season: February is the rainiest month in the Cusco region. Heavy rainfall increases the risk of landslides, falling rocks, and slippery trails. The closure helps protect visitors, guides, and porters.
The closure runs from February 1 to 28 (or 29 in leap years). No permits are issued during this period, and the trail normally reopens on March 1.

Is Machu Picchu open in February?
Yes. The Machu Picchu citadel remains open year-round. Only hiking access through the Inca Trail is closed. You can still reach Machu Picchu by train and bus from Ollantaytambo or the Sacred Valley without any problems.
Alternatives to the Inca Trail in February
Although the Inca Trail is closed, there are excellent options for reaching Machu Picchu and enjoying adventure or wellness experiences:
- Salkantay Trek: One of the best trekking alternatives. It remains open year-round and offers breathtaking mountain scenery.
- Lares Trek: A more cultural route that offers opportunities to connect with Andean communities. It’s also available in February.
- Train + Machu Picchu visit: The most comfortable and safest option. Ideal if you prefer to avoid trekking.
- Wellness experiences in Cusco: Take advantage of your trip to connect with Andean energy through gentle hikes, yoga, ceremonies, and wellness retreats.
If your trip falls in February, you can reschedule your Inca Trail trek for after March 1 or choose one of these alternatives. Permits for the Classic Inca Trail sell out 4 to 6 months in advance, so it’s recommended to plan ahead.
