Why visit it
The Main Square (Plaza de Armas) in Arequipa is the heart of the “White City,” built entirely from sillar, a unique white volcanic stone. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and from here you can enjoy spectacular views of the Misti Volcano, as well as explore the most elegant colonial architecture in Peru.
Must-see highlights
The Cathedral: An impressive construction of white sillar in a Renaissance style with Gothic touches. Its façade features seventy columns with Corinthian capitals. Entrance is free, but the museum costs 10 soles.
The Tuturutu: In the center of the square, there is an 18th-century bronze fountain topped with a small statue called “The Tuturutu.” Legend has it that it was a messenger of the Inca who announced important news with his trumpet.
The Portals: The square is surrounded by elegant white sillar arcades on three sides. These portals showcase the best Arequipeño colonial style and house cafes, craft shops, and restaurants with terraces.

What to do
Enjoy the views: From any point in the square, you can see the imposing Misti Volcano and other volcanoes surrounding the city. The views are especially beautiful on clear days.
Dine with a view: The restaurants in the portals allow you to try traditional dishes like rocoto relleno or shrimp chupe while enjoying the view of the square and the volcano.
Explore nearby churches: Very close by is the Church of the Company of Jesus, considered the best example of mestizo Arequipeño architectural style.

Sunset is magical because the golden light transforms the white sillar and gives a special tone to all the buildings. It’s also ideal to visit early in the morning to avoid crowds and have better lighting for photographs.
