Visiting Machu Picchu is an experience in itself and you should experience it at least once in your lifetime. But do you wonder if it’s worth visiting Machu Picchu at sunrise? Things have changed, and significantly so.
The place is the same and the history it hides is too, but the point of view is very different and so is the experience. That’s why today we offer our opinion on this early visit to this wonder of the world and whether it’s worth it.

What is most attractive about seeing sunrise at Machu Picchu?
Perhaps we’re not objective here, but sunsets and sunrises will always leave precious memories for our travels. Maybe that’s why we think it’s worth seeing the sunrise at Machu Picchu.
Obviously, the first change that occurs compared to the more common trip to Machu Picchu is the change of light in the sky. You may not see the sunrise directly since tours don’t open that early.
At an altitude of 2430 meters above sea level, the ruins of Machu Picchu offer incredible views of the mountains and the sacred valley. Of course, we’ll be completely honest: at this altitude, it’s likely that clouds will be present most of the time and won’t allow you to see the beautiful skies that we’ve always hoped to see from this place.
So, if you’re not lucky and have a cloudy day, here’s the second part of why it’s worth seeing sunrise at Machu Picchu. It’s one of the most visited destinations in the world, so making the effort to get up early and leave before other travelers will allow you to see the most famous sites in the world at once without the crowds.
When does the sun rise at Machu Picchu?
At Machu Picchu, the sun rises between 5:15 and 6:15 am. It all depends on what time of year you’re there, of course. The first tours are at 7:00 am, that’s why we say you most likely won’t see the sun rise, but you will see the first rays of light.
From which place is it most recommended to see sunrise at Machu Picchu
The best place to see the sunrise over Machu Picchu is the Sun Gate, also known as Intipunku, a place that offers a great view of the center of Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, the sky will clear and the sun will slowly illuminate the area.
