  • Travel itinerary order: You start on the coast, at sea level, and gradually move to higher elevations: Arequipa, Colca Canyon, Puno, and Cusco. This allows your body to adjust to the altitude in stages. Humantay Lake and Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) are scheduled toward the end, after you’ve already spent more than a week in the Andean highlands.
  • Luggage: For the train to Machu Picchu, travel with a lightweight backpack weighing 5 to 8 kg. Your main suitcase will be stored at your hotel in Cusco.
  • Clothing for three different climates: Lightweight clothing, a cap, and sunglasses for Paracas, Huacachina, and Nazca; layered thermal clothing, a fleece jacket, windbreaker, warm hat, and gloves for Colca Canyon, Puno, and Cusco; and a waterproof jacket and hiking shoes for Humantay Lake and Rainbow Mountain.
  • Early departures and long journeys: Excursions to Paracas, Humantay Lake, and Rainbow Mountain begin between 4:00 and 5:00 a.m., so prepare your backpack the night before. The routes from Nazca to Arequipa, Chivay to Puno, and the Route of the Sun involve long road journeys. Bring water, snacks, and something warm for the bus.
  • Health Recommendations

    • If you have heart or respiratory problems, high blood pressure, are pregnant, or have any chronic medical condition, consult your doctor before traveling and inform us when booking. This itinerary includes hikes at 4,200 and 5,020 m above sea level.
    • To help prevent altitude sickness, drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous activity, and refrain from drinking alcohol during your first few days in Arequipa, Colca Canyon, and Puno.
    • At the Volcanoes Viewpoint (4,910 m above sea level), the stop is brief. Walk slowly and avoid running.
    • Bring your personal medications along with their prescriptions. If you plan to take any medication for altitude sickness, consult your doctor beforehand.
    • At Humantay Lake and Rainbow Mountain, hike at your own pace and take short breaks. If you experience severe dizziness or shortness of breath, notify your guide immediately.
    • If you are prone to motion sickness on small aircraft, consult your doctor before the Nazca Lines flight and avoid eating a heavy meal beforehand.
    • On the coast, use sunscreen even on cloudy days. In the highlands, eat light meals and stay hydrated. You may also enjoy coca or muña tea, traditional Andean herbal drinks commonly used for altitude discomfort.

    Travel Rules and Recommendations

    • Always follow your guide’s instructions and stay on designated routes. Drones and tripods are not allowed at Machu Picchu, and you must carry your entrance ticket and passport.
    • The Ballestas Islands are a protected area. Visits take place from the boat, without disembarking.
    • During dune buggy rides in Huacachina, always wear your seat belt and follow the driver’s instructions.
    • At Condor Cross, do not cross the safety railings or approach the canyon’s edge to take photos.
    • On the Uros and Taquile Islands, ask for permission before photographing local people.
    • Keep your belongings in sight, especially at bus terminals and markets.
    • In case of an emergency, contact our team or call the police at 105.
