TRAVEL DESCRIPTION

The 5-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is the most famous hiking route in Peru and one of the most impressive in the world. If you’re a nature lover and enjoy trekking along ancient paths, this five-day experience will allow you to connect with history and the stunning Andean landscapes like never before. Along the way, you’ll pass by ancient archaeological sites and spend the night in the town of Aguas Calientes before reaching the majestic Inca citadel. Rest assured, you won’t regret taking on this amazing trek!

PROGRAM SUMMARY

Day 01

Cusco | Km 82 – Willca Racay – Patallapta – Wayllabamba

Hotel pickup in Cusco at 6:00 AM, transfer to Sacred Valley to km 82 where the hike begins visiting the archaeological complexes of Willca Racay and Patallapta. The day ends at Wayllabamba camp (9,843 ft) with spectacular views of La Verónica snow-capped mountain.

Day 02

Wayllabamba – Tres Piedras – Llulluchapampa – Warmihuañusca Pass – Pacaymayo

Ascent to the highest point of the trek at Warmihuañusca Pass or "Dead Woman's Pass" (13,779 ft) passing through Tres Piedras and Llulluchapampa. Subsequent descent to camp at Pacaymayo (11,811 ft) with impressive Andean views.

Day 03

Pacaymayo – Runkuraqay – Sayacmarca – Chaquiccocha – Phuyupatamarca

Ascent to Runkuraqay pass (12,959 ft), descent to Sayacmarca and continuation to Chaquiccocha for lunch. The route crosses landscapes full of orchids and native flora, ending at Phuyupatamarca camp with possible views of Salkantay, La Verónica and Pumasillu snow-capped mountains.

Day 04

Phuyupatamarca – Intipata – Wiñayhuayna – Inti Punku – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes

Descent toward Machu Picchu passing through Intipata (agricultural sector) and Wiñayhuayna, arriving at Inti Punku for the first view of Machu Picchu. Time to contemplate the citadel from the classic viewpoint before descending to Aguas Calientes for overnight stay.

Day 05

Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Waynapicchu – Ollantaytambo – Cusco

2-hour guided tour in Machu Picchu at sunrise, followed by optional ascent to Waynapicchu mountain. Return to Aguas Calientes, train to Ollantaytambo and final transport to Cusco arriving at the hotel.

TRAVEL ITINERARY

Day 1: Cusco to Km 82 (By Private Bus) – Km 82 To Huayllabamba (12Km)

  • Our 5-Day Inca Trail tour begins with pickup from your hotel at 6:00 a.m. to head toward the Sacred Valley.
  • The starting point of the hike is at kilometer 82 (km 82).
  • Along the way, we will visit the archaeological complexes of Willca Racay and Patallapta.
  • Soon after, we’ll encounter magnificent landscapes of the Urubamba mountain range, including the stunning snow-capped peak “La Verónica” (18,865 ft / 5750 m).
  • As a result, we will arrive at Huayllabamba (9,843 ft / 3000 m), where we’ll have dinner and set up camp.

  • Likewise, we start with a delicious and nutritious breakfast
  • Then, we begin to ascend to the place of “Tres Piedras” and then we rest for a brief moment.
  • Upon reaching Llulluchapampa (3750 masl) we will stop to enjoy our box lunch and replenish our energy.
  • Consequently, we will arrive at the Abra de Warmihuañusca or “The Passage of the Dead Woman” (4200 masl).
  • Immediately, we will see from the highest point the impressive landscapes of the Andes and the low jungle.
  • As a result, we will begin the descent to our camp in Pacaymayo (3600 masl).

  • Runkuraqay Archaeological Site Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
  • First of all, after breakfast we prepare for the third day of walking.
  • We will reach the top of the opening of Runkuraqay (3950 msnm).
  • Then, we will descend towards Sayacmarca (3500 msnm) in a tour of approximately 01 and a half hour.
  • We will observe a landscape full of orchids, ferns, native flowers and exotic species.
  • Immediately, upon reaching Chaquiccocha (3550 msnm) we will take our lunch.
  • It may be possible to visualize the snowy peaks of the Salkantay, La Veronica and the Pumasillu.
  • Finally, our camp will be located in Phuyupatamarca.
    • Accommodation: Camp in Phuyupatamarca
  • After breakfast we will start the hike to Machu Picchu.
  • Then, in the descent we will arrive at Intipata, which was the largest agricultural sector found in the area.
  • From Wiñayhuayna we will walk for about 1 hour to arrive at Inti Punku, from here you can see Machu Picchu for the first time.
  • Immediately, we will arrive at the classic viewpoint of the famous cover images of Machu Picchu, where we will spend time viewing the spectacular landscapes.
  • Continuing, we will descend to the town of Aguas Calientes.
  • As a result, we will have dinner and spend the night in the village.

  • First of all, after breakfast at the hotel we begin the most important day.
  • Next, we will take the bus that will take us to Machu Picchu.
  • We will certainly try to be one of the first to enter the citadel to enjoy the beautiful sunrise over Machu Picchu citadel.
  • Our guide will give you a 02-hour tour, showing you the most important places in the magical city.
  • Then, we will proceed with the ascent to the Waynapicchu mountain, it will take a couple of hours to visit it.
  • From the top we will be able to admire the magnificence of Machu Picchu and the sacred river.
  • Consequently, we return to Aguas Calientes for lunch.
  • Next, we will take the train to Ollantaytambo and then transport us to Cusco.
  • We end up leaving you at your hotel.
NOTE: The Waynapicchu mountain is optional for people who do not wish to do it. However, if you choose not to do it, you will be able to visit all the corners of the Historical Sanctuary on your own.

Health Recommendations

  • Inform the agency about any heart, respiratory, high blood pressure conditions, or pregnancy before booking. The Inca Trail reaches 4,215 m (13,828 ft) and requires good physical condition.
  • Acclimatize in Cusco at least 2 days before starting the trek. Drink plenty of water and avoid heavy meals and alcohol during acclimatization.
  • Bring enough personal medication for the 4 days, including pain relievers, sunscreen, and altitude sickness medication if recommended by a doctor.
  • The weather varies significantly: warm days (up to 20°C / 68°F) and cold nights (down to -5°C / 23°F at campsites). Bring layered clothing and an appropriate sleeping bag.

Inca Trail Regulations

  • Follow the guide’s instructions at all times. Entry to Machu Picchu has strict schedules, and leaving the official trail is not allowed.
  • Leaving trash on the trail is prohibited. All waste must be carried to the designated collection points at the campsites.
  • Trekking poles must have rubber tips to protect the original Inca stone path.
