Arequipa, renowned for its imposing Andean geography and globally famous attractions such as the Colca Canyon or the majestic Misti volcano, also holds a little-known secret: a coastline with fascinating beaches, ideal for those seeking adventure, tranquility, and landscapes distinct from the traditional Peruvian coast.
Although most tourists associate Arequipa with its colonial architecture and highland landscapes, this southern region of Peru also boasts paradisiacal beaches, tranquil coves, natural pools, and family resorts, perfect for camping, enjoying fresh seafood, or simply relaxing by the Pacific Ocean.
Here we present a complete guide to 7 lesser-known beaches in Arequipa that will surprise you. We include information on how to get there, what to do, and recommendations for an unforgettable experience.
1. Playa Catarindo
Located just 2 kilometers (approx. 1.2 miles) from the district of Mollendo, in the province of Islay, Catarindo beach is a hidden gem that combines rocky landscapes, impressive cliffs, and a very fine white sand strip. Its waters are calm, ideal for swimming, diving, artisanal fishing, or taking a boat ride around the bay.
During the summer (January to March), this beach becomes a very popular spot for local families. There are basic services like umbrella rental, parking, and small restaurants offering ceviche, chicharrones, and other seafood delicacies. Due to its small size, it can get very crowded on weekends.
How to get there: From Mollendo, you can take a taxi or mototaxi (approx. cost S/.5).
Additional tip: Visit on weekdays to enjoy it more peacefully.
2. Playa Tanaka
Tanaka beach, located in the district of Yauca, province of Caravelí, is perfect for those seeking a relaxed and little-explored environment. Its cove shape turns it into a kind of natural pool. The Desembarcadero and Las Viejas pools are the best known for their beauty and depth, ideal for snorkeling or amateur diving.
The atmosphere here is very tranquil, ideal for a relaxing getaway. However, it has no tourist infrastructure or shops. It is recommended to bring everything you need for the day, from snacks to safety equipment.
How to get there: From Chala or Nazca, you can take a colectivo or taxi towards Yauca and access the beach from there.
Additional tip: Bring your personal snorkel gear, as rentals are not available.
3. Caleta de San José
Situated near the town of Quilca, in the province of Camaná, Caleta de San José (San José Cove) is a dream beach accessible only by boat, which gives it an almost exclusive character. The journey, approximately two hours long from the port of Quilca, already offers views of birds, rock formations, and occasionally penguins or sea lions.
Once there, you will find crystal-clear waters, white sand, and clear skies. There are ecological lodgings and seafood restaurants. This beach is perfect for those looking to disconnect from the urban hustle and bustle.
How to get there: Bus to Quilca from Arequipa (124 km / approx. 77 miles) + boat (approx. cost S/.20).
Additional tip: There are organized tours that include water sports like kayaking, diving, or fishing.
4. Playa La Miel
Just 37 km (approx. 23 miles) from the city of Camaná, in the district of Quilca, is Playa La Miel, a perfect destination for campers and adventurers. Its light-colored sand and warm waters allow for enjoyment of both the day and nights around a campfire.
Being surrounded by hills and dunes, the feeling of isolation is complete. While there is no developed tourist infrastructure, during the summer some vendors offer food and basic services.
How to get there: Colectivo taxi from Camaná to Quilca (short highway route).
Additional tip: Bring a sleeping bag, flashlight, warm clothing for the night, and repellent.
5. Playa Mejía
Located within the Mejía Lagoons National Sanctuary, Mejía beach is one of Arequipa’s most important and complete coastal destinations. In addition to its wide beaches, white sand, and gentle waves, there is the possibility of spotting migratory birds, walking along the boardwalk, or visiting Castillo Forga, situated on a cliff overlooking the sea.
This resort town has restaurants, lodgings, and areas for sport fishing. It is ideal for those who want to enjoy nature with greater comfort. In high season, it is one of the most crowded beaches in the region.
How to get there: From Mollendo (17 km / approx. 10.5 miles), colectivo taxi to the beach.
Additional tip: Don’t miss the sunset from the castle, an impressive view.
6. Playa Honoratos
Far from traditional tourist routes, Honoratos beach is located in an isolated area of the Quilca district and can only be reached by a boat trip of almost two and a half hours. The effort is totally worth it: you will find a reddish sand beach, serene waters, and incredible marine biodiversity.
Ideal for camping, diving, or simply contemplating nature, Honoratos is one of the best-kept secrets of Peru’s southern coast. Of course, you must bring provisions and respect the environment, especially if you encounter sea lions or penguins.
How to get there: From Camaná, taxi to the port of Quilca + boat (approx. S/.25).
Additional tip: Don’t leave trash and respect the local wildlife. The place deserves it.

Among the most popular are Playa Uno and Playa Dos, with spacious areas for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying with family or friends.
