If you’re planning to visit Vinicunca, you’ve probably come across two main options. For trekking enthusiasts and those who prefer the traditional route, the most popular choice is still the Rainbow Mountain Tour, which includes the well-known hike to admire the stunning landscape.
However, if you’re looking for a more adventurous option that requires less physical effort, the ATV Tour to Rainbow Mountain has recently gained a lot of popularity, offering a different way to experience this natural wonder.
Difference #1: Hiking Time
Classic Tour:
You’ll walk between 2 to 3 hours from the starting point (Llacto) to the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint. It’s approximately 3.4 miles with an elevation gain of 1,970 feet. The return takes another 1.5 to 2 hours.
ATV Tour:
You only walk the last 20-30 minutes (approximately 0.6 miles). The ATV takes you from Llacto to a point much closer to the viewpoint, reducing physical effort by 80%.
Difference #2: Physical Difficulty Level
Classic Tour:
Requires moderate to good physical condition. The hike is a constant uphill climb at over 15,000 feet altitude, which causes many people to suffer from altitude sickness (soroche). Not recommended if you have heart, respiratory, or knee problems.
ATV Tour:
Low difficulty level. You only need to walk the final stretch, which is short but steep. Ideal if you have physical limitations, are traveling with seniors, or simply don’t want to tire yourself out too much.
Difference #3: Price
Classic Tour:
Between 40 to 60 soles per person (may vary by agency). It’s the most economical option.
ATV Tour:
Between 120 to 180 soles per person. The price includes ATV rental, which can be individual or shared (driver + passenger).
Difference #4: Total Tour Duration
Classic Tour:
Between 12 to 14 hours total. You leave Cusco around 4:00 am and return between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm.
ATV Tour:
Between 10 to 12 hours. Although the vehicle route is the same, you save time by not walking as much.
Difference #5: Experience and Scenery
Classic Tour:
You walk along trails with panoramic views of valleys, alpaca herds, and local communities. You have more direct contact with the natural environment. Many travelers value this more “authentic” experience.
ATV Tour:
The ATV route is along dirt roads with similar landscapes, but at higher speed. The experience is more adventurous and dynamic, though less contemplative.
Difference #6: Necessary Acclimatization
Classic Tour:
You need at least 2 days of acclimatization in Cusco (11,150 feet) before doing the hike. Physical exertion at high altitude can cause severe altitude sickness if you’re not acclimated.
ATV Tour:
Although you’re still at high altitude, the physical exertion is less, so the impact of altitude sickness may be more manageable. Still, 1-2 days of acclimatization is recommended.

Which to Choose?
Choose the classic tour if:
– You’re in good physical condition
– You’re looking for a more economical experience
– You enjoy hiking and direct contact with nature
– You have enough time to acclimatize in Cusco
Choose the ATV tour if:
– You have physical or health limitations
– You’re traveling with seniors or children
– You have a larger budget
– You want to reduce the risk of altitude sickness from exertion
– You’re looking for a more adventurous experience
Important Facts for Both Tours
– Both reach the same point: the Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) viewpoint
– Both include breakfast and lunch
– Both depart very early in the morning from Cusco
– The entrance fee (10 soles for Peruvians, 20 soles for foreigners) is additional in both cases
– Both are subject to weather conditions (rain, snow)
– The best time for both is from April to October (dry season)
The ATV tour isn’t “better” than the classic one, it’s simply different and suits different traveler profiles. The final decision depends on your budget, physical condition, and the type of experience you’re looking for.
