The 7 Colors Mountain is at 5,200 meters altitude. Getting there on foot means a 2-hour hike (round trip) at high altitude. But there’s an alternative: the ATV tour to the 7 Colors Mountain takes you directly to the viewpoint without needing to walk.
Why choose the ATV?
- You avoid the physical effort of hiking at altitude
- You save time (you arrive in 40-50 minutes vs. 2 hours walking)
- Ideal if you have knee problems or limited physical condition
- The experience of riding an ATV through Andean landscapes is part of the appeal
- You reduce the risk of altitude sickness from physical exertion
How does the ATV tour work?
Pick-up: You’ll be picked up from your hotel in Cusco between 4:00 – 4:30 am
Journey to Cusipata: 3 hours by transport to the starting point of the ATV tour
Breakfast: Stop for breakfast before getting on the ATVs
Safety instructions: Brief training on how to operate the ATV
ATV ride: 40-50 minutes riding to the Vinicunca viewpoint
Time at the mountain: 30-40 minutes for photos and enjoying the scenery
Return: Return by ATV and arrival in Cusco around 4:00 pm
Do I need previous ATV experience?
No. The ATVs are automatic and easy to operate. The guide explains the basic controls: throttle, brake, and steering. The route is packed dirt without complicated maneuvers.
Do you have to walk at all?
Only a few steps from where the ATVs park to the observation point. It’s less than 5 minutes on foot, minimal distance compared to the 2 hours of the traditional hike.
Important limitations
Weather: During rainy season (December-March) the road may close due to mud. Confirm availability before booking.
Minimum age: To operate an individual ATV you must be an adult. Minors ride as passengers on double ATVs.
Not for everyone: If you have serious heart problems or are pregnant, consult your doctor. Altitude is still a factor even though you won’t be walking.
Is it worth it?
If your priority is reaching the 7 Colors Mountain without the physical strain of hiking, this option works perfectly. You miss out on the trekking experience, but you gain accessibility and the excitement of the ATV ride.
The price is higher than the traditional walking tour, but for people with limited time, low physical condition, or simply a preference to avoid long hikes at altitude, the ATV is the solution.
