The hike, which is usually included as the main part of the Humantay Lake Tour, is moderate to difficult, mainly due to the altitude. The trail is approximately 2 kilometers from the starting point in Soraypampa (3,900 masl) to the lake (4,200 masl), with an elevation gain of 300 meters.
What makes this hike challenging:
Altitude is the most challenging factor. At 4,200 meters, available oxygen is 40% less than at sea level. Many people experience rapid fatigue, shortness of breath, and headaches, even if they’re in good physical shape.
The terrain is steep and uneven in some sections. The first half is the most demanding, with a constant incline that requires frequent breaks. The second part is less steep but still challenging.
Time needed:
- Ascent: 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on your pace
- Descent: 45 minutes to 1 hour
- Most people need to stop several times to catch their breath
Can you do it without experience?
Yes, but be prepared to go slow. You don’t need to be an athlete, but you do need basic fitness. Sedentary people can do it, it just takes them more time and more breaks.
Factors that influence:
- Acclimatization: if you arrive directly from Lima or the coast, it will be much harder
- Weather: during the rainy season (November-March) the trail can be muddy and slippery
- Time of day: leaving early avoids the intense afternoon sun
Most visitors complete the hike successfully, although they admit it was more demanding than expected. The key is to take it easy and listen to your body.
