San Pedro Market in Cusco

The San Pedro Market invites you to dive into the authentic heart of Cusco life, where you’ll experience an explosion of colors, aromas, and flavors that reflect the pure essence of Andean culture in the most historic and emblematic supply center of the imperial city.

The history you will know

Colonial legacy and unique architecture: The San Pedro Market was inaugurated in 1925 and has since been a cultural and commercial epicenter of the city of Cusco. Designed by the famous French architect Gustave Eiffel (yes, the same one who designed the Eiffel Tower), its metallic structure remains one of the market’s highlights.

Ancestral tradition: It is considered the oldest trading point in Cusco as commercial activities developed there during the colonial era (sixteenth century). It was part of a segment of the Inca road that connected to Huacaypata Square (now the Main Square).

Architectural evolution: In the early 20th century, merchants who were settled in the main square were relocated to make commerce in the city more sanitary. Today, there are 1,180 stalls selling fruits, vegetables, breads, snacks, utensils, breakfasts, lunches, and all kinds of handicrafts.

The sensory experience you will live

A feast for the senses: From the vibrant colors of textiles to the unique flavors of local cuisine, this market is a reflection of the soul of Cusco. The colors, sounds, and aromas of the market in the early morning hours are something to experience.

Authentic cultural immersion: You will hear Cusco citizens conversing in Quechua, the language of the Incas and of the current inhabitants of many regions of the Andes. You will observe traditions of Andean culture such as the use of the lliclla (a shawl used by women to carry their babies on their backs).

The unique products you will discover

Traditional cuisine: In the market, you can taste the most notable dishes of typical Cusco and Peruvian food. Highlights include: lomo saltado, ceviche, causa rellena, arroz chaufa, fried trout, escabeche, and broths made from head, tongue, and even bull testicles (criadilla).

Fruits and Andean products: You can appreciate or purchase typical fruits and products from Cusco and Peru such as purple corn, white corn, kiwicha, quinoa, artichokes, hundreds of varieties of potatoes, and more. There are also stalls selling coffee and cacao produced in the Cusco jungle.

The cultural experiences you will have

Traditional medicine: The Incas treated many of their ailments and diseases using various types of herbs. Today, many Cusco citizens still use herbs as natural medicine. For example, the coca leaf (sacred to the Incas) is still used to relieve pain and enhance physical performance.

Authentic handicrafts: You can buy all kinds of handicrafts and clothing made from alpaca fiber. There are also jewelry, t-shirts, Peruvian musical instruments, and all sorts of souvenirs available at affordable prices.

Curious traditions: In the San Pedro Market, there is a section where frog extracts are offered. This is a very ancient custom in the Andes that many people still practice. It is believed that this drink has medicinal and aphrodisiac properties.
