What is the trail to the Seven Lagoons of Ausangate like?
For a 1-day excursion to the Seven Lagoons of Ausangate, the trail is well-marked, making it easy for those traveling on their own to find their way. In addition, there are some stands along the route where local women sell water, coca leaves, and other sweets, while also offering their handicrafts such as alpaca scarves. You will find them at more than one point. To do the 2-day route or even the full Ausangate circuit, it is necessary to have a good map guide or hire a travel agency.
Where to eat on the route of the Seven Lagoons of Ausangate?
Since it is a tourist destination, some residents of Pacchanta have started serving travelers in their local restaurants. If your plan is to travel on your own, it is recommended that before heading to the lagoons you reserve a meal at one of the restaurants, so that when you return you will have a guaranteed place to have lunch. And for those traveling with a tour, lunch is also included at one of the local restaurants.
Why are they turquoise?
Some of these lagoons have a turquoise-green hue in their color, which is what makes them attractive. The water coming down from the glaciers carries finely ground minerals that remain suspended in the lagoons rather than sinking to the bottom. This way, on sunny days, the color effect can be better appreciated.
Flora and Fauna
Since this is a hike through the natural region of the “Puna,” you will naturally be able to appreciate the wildlife characteristic of these highlands, with hundreds of alpacas, llamas, and sheep, among others, in their natural habitat. On the other hand, the abundant ichu grass (Stipa Ichu) spreads across the slopes, along with wild herbs that grow only at ground level due to the climate at this altitude. From time to time, birds such as the large Andean geese (Chloephaga melanoptera) and others can be seen flying near the lagoons or occasionally soaring above them.
