waqrapukara itinerary

Cusco | Chuquicahauana | Acomayo | Waqrapukara | Cusco

  • Our one day adventure starts very early. We will pass by your accommodation to pick you up at 4:00 am. Then we will make a two and a half hour trip to the town of Marcaconga. We will continue to the Pitumarca district to enjoy our tasty breakfast.
Once we’re full and ready to go, we have a final thirty-minute drive down an unpaved road to reach our trek starting point. You will have a little time to collect your things before leaving.
  • The first section lasts two and a half hours, and you will be able to observe magnificent landscapes dotted with small glacial lakes along the way.
When we arrive at the Waqrapukara viewpoint, you can rest a bit and take your first photos of the impressive fortress that sits on the edge of a canyon.
  • Next, we will descend for about forty minutes on a steep path along the edge of the cliff to the site itself while the Apurímac River flows rapidly below. You will be able to tour the archaeological site for about an hour and a half, climb the remains of the temple and take photos in front of the incredible landscape of the canyon. The incredible scenery will take your breath away.
  • Finally, when the group is ready, we will begin the ascent back the way we came. We will arrive by private transport after about three hours of walking and we will return to Cusco arriving around 7:00 pm.

Health Recommendations

  • The hike to Waqrapukara takes place between 3,500 and 4,300 m.a.s.l., so it is important to arrive in Cusco with 1 to 2 days of acclimatization. If you have heart or respiratory conditions, high blood pressure, or are pregnant, inform the agency before booking.
  • Walk at your own pace throughout the route. The altitude can cause fatigue, so it is recommended to take breaks whenever needed.
  • Stay hydrated during the entire hike to help prevent altitude sickness, especially on the steeper sections of the trail.
  • Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, basic pain relievers, and any personal medication you may require.
  • Avoid heavy meals and alcoholic beverages the day before the tour, as they can affect your physical performance at high altitude.
  • The weather in the area is variable: cold mornings, strong winds at higher elevations, and intense sun at midday. Wear layered clothing, a hat, gloves, and a waterproof jacket.
  • Respect the natural environment, rock formations, and the local communities that live along the route.

Rules and Recommendations for the Waqrapukara Route

  • Always follow the guide’s instructions throughout the entire hike.
  • Do not litter. Carry a small personal bag for your trash and dispose of it at the end of the tour.
  • The use of trekking poles is optional; if you bring them, ensure they have rubber tips to avoid damaging the terrain.
