Recommendations
Book in Advance
- Machu Picchu entry tickets (especially for Circuit 2) sell out months in advance, so book as early as possible.
- If you plan to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, secure your tickets at least 3–4 months ahead of time.
- Train tickets (especially Vistadome or Expedition) should also be booked in advance to get better schedules.
Prepare for the Altitude
- Cusco is at 3,399 m (11,152 ft) and Machu Picchu at 2,430 m (7,972 ft); some travelers may experience altitude sickness.
- Spend at least one day in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before visiting Machu Picchu to acclimate.
- Drink coca tea (available in hotels and restaurants) or take altitude sickness medication if necessary.
Choose the Best Circuit for You
- Circuit 1: Upper part of Machu Picchu – ideal for the classic panoramic photo but does not allow access to the lower part.
- Circuit 2 (Recommended): The most complete route, covering both the upper and lower parts of Machu Picchu. It sells out quickly!
- Circuit 3: Lower part of Machu Picchu – good for those who prefer a shorter, less strenuous walk.
Best Time to Visit
- Dry season (May to September): Best weather, less rain, but more tourists.
- Rainy season (October to April): Fewer tourists, greener landscapes, but higher chance of rain. Bring a rain poncho!
- Early morning (6:00 AM – 9:00 AM): Magical sunrise, cooler weather, fewer crowds.
- Midday to afternoon (10:00 AM – 2:00 PM): Warmer, more crowded, but excellent lighting for photos.
- Keep your tickets and ID handy
- You will need to show your passport or ID along with your Machu Picchu entry ticket several times (train, bus, and entrance).
- If you are a student, have your ISIC card ready for the discount.
- If you change your passport after booking, bring both your old and new passports.
Go at Your Own Pace & Stay Hydrated
- Machu Picchu involves a lot of walking and stairs, so take breaks when necessary.
- Stay hydrated, but remember that single-use plastic bottles are not allowed; bring a reusable bottle.
- Have a light breakfast before entering Machu Picchu to avoid feeling sluggish.
- Follow the rules of Machu Picchu
- Do not bring large backpacks (only small bags up to 20 liters are allowed).
- Food is not allowed inside, but small snacks (like energy bars) are permitted.
- Drones, tripods, and umbrellas are prohibited.
